Behind the arcade challenge is a playful look at free-to-play dark patterns and the psychology of microtransactions. Inspired by the 2016 talk Let's Go Whaling: Tricks for Monetising Mobile Game Players with Free-to-Play, it explores how offers, virtual currencies and pressure to keep playing can influence decisions.
Are you a whale? In gaming, a whale means a high-spending player, while dolphins and minnows describe smaller spenders. Here, those labels refer only to simulated spending during this round, not Bitcoin holdings, wealth or a real spending profile. Your report also reflects whether cosmetics, competition, collecting, grinding or skipping waits drew you in.
The final reveal walks through the choices you made and names patterns such as loss aversion, near-misses, decoy pricing and artificial scarcity. For another look at how presentation nudges choices, try the cognitive bias quiz in Gut Check or the behavioral experiments in Mind Lab.

FAQ
Is Free to Play really free?
Yes. Every purchase in the game is simulated. No real money is charged, no payment details are collected, and you do not need an account or download.
What is a gaming whale?
A gaming whale is an informal term for a player who spends a large amount on a game. Dolphin and minnow are labels for smaller spenders. The thresholds vary between games; Free to Play uses its own fictional categories for a single simulated round.
Is this an are-you-a-whale test?
It is a playful gaming-whale test wrapped in a match-3 game. Your final report combines simulated spending with the choices you made during play. It is not a financial, clinical or scientifically validated assessment.
What are free-to-play dark patterns?
They are design choices that pressure or steer players toward spending or staying longer, such as artificial wait timers, misleading scarcity, near-miss offers and prices hidden behind virtual currency.
What inspired Free to Play?
The game was inspired by the 2016 talk Let's Go Whaling: Tricks for Monetising Mobile Game Players with Free-to-Play. It turns monetisation techniques into an interactive experience with a reveal at the end.
All purchases are simulated. Player labels are fictional, game-specific feedback, not a validated psychological assessment or prediction of real spending.
