100 Hue Test

Playable

How good is your color vision, really?

The Farnsworth Munsell 100 Hue Test is one of the best-known color vision tests in the world. Photographers, designers and colorists use it to check how finely they can tell similar shades apart. This free online hue test brings the same idea to your browser: sort colored caps into a smooth gradient and see how close to perfect you get.

There are four trays covering the whole color wheel. In each tray, the first and last caps are fixed, and the colors in between are shuffled. Your job is to put them back in order, making every step as small as possible. It sounds easy. Somewhere around blue-green, it usually stops being easy.

When you finish, you get a total error score, a tier from Superior to Low, and a polar plot that shows exactly which part of the spectrum gave you trouble. 0 is a perfect run. Then you can share your score as an image and dare your friends to beat it.

How to play

Press Start the test. Drag a cap to a new spot, or tap two caps to swap them. Keep going until the row looks like one smooth gradient, then press Next tray.

Complete all four trays and press See my result. Your error score, tier and polar error plot appear together, along with a shareable result card.

How the hue test is scored

  • Superior: error score from 0 to 16.
  • Average: error score from 16 to 100.
  • Low: error score above 100.

Scoring follows the classic Farnsworth-Munsell method. Each cap gets a score based on how far it sits from its neighbours in the correct order, minus 2. Add these up and you get the total error score (TES). A perfectly ordered run scores 0.

Reading your polar plot

Each spoke on the circle is one cap. The inner circle means a perfect placement; spikes outward show caps you put out of order. If your spikes cluster on one side of the wheel, that is the part of the spectrum where your eyes, or your screen, find the colors hardest to separate.

Get the most accurate result

  • Turn off night mode, blue-light filters and True Tone.
  • Set your screen brightness fairly high and avoid strong glare.
  • Take your time. There is no timer, and rushing costs points.

FAQ

What is the Farnsworth Munsell 100 Hue Test?

It is a classic color vision test where you arrange colored caps in order of hue. The number of mistakes gives an error score that shows how well you tell close shades apart. This online version is inspired by it and uses 81 movable caps in four trays.

Is this an official color blindness test?

No. This is a screening game, not a medical test. Monitors differ in color, brightness and calibration, so scores vary between devices. If you suspect a color vision deficiency, see an optometrist.

What is a good score on the 100 hue test?

Lower is better. A score from 0 to 16 is in the Superior range, 16 to 100 is Average, and above 100 is Low. 0 means a perfect arrangement.

Why does my score change between devices?

Every screen shows colors a little differently. Brightness, night mode, color profiles and the light in your room all affect how the caps look.

Is the hue test free?

Yes. It runs free in your browser on desktop and mobile, with no account and no download.

For fun and curiosity only. This is not a medical or diagnostic test, and results depend on your screen. Percentiles are estimates from published norms for the physical test.
